Courses for Master's degree applicants
Educational-professional program «Physics»
1. Contemporary Physical Problems
1st year course (1st term), 6 credits (180 hours)
Professor Sergey I. Tarapov
A course of lectures dedicated to a wide review of contemporary physical problems. The course is given to all the applicants of Master's degree of the Physical faculty. It is comprised of 3 parts: 1. Weak superconductivity; 2. Quantum computer; 3. Metamaterials. The 3rd part is given at the Physical optics chair.
2. Assistant Practice
1st year course (2nd term), 6 credits (180 hours)
Associate Professor Mykola O. Makarovskyi
Assistant practice for master's degree applicants of the Physical optics chair, who study according to the educational-professional program «Physics», is conducted during the first 4 weeks of the term with a break from studies.
3. Optics of Thin Films
1st year course (2nd term), 3 credits (90 hours)
Associate Professor Mykola O. Makarovskyi
A course of lectures dedicated to studying optical properties of thin coatings, both individual films and multilayered coatings. Theoretical foundations of films' optical properties are considered. Spectral dependencies of reflection, transmission and absorption coefficients are studied. A review of methods to determine films' optical and geometrical characteristics is given. Ways of calculating and creating multilayered coatings are stated for highly reflective mirrors, narrow-band, cutting and polarization filters.
4. Metamaterials and Their Dispersive Properties
1st year course (2nd term), 3 credits (90 hours)
Professor Sergey I. Tarapov
A course of lectures dedicated to electromagnetic properties of metamaterials i.e. media which response is determined by the medium as a whole, not by individual atoms. Such topics are covered as properties of photonic crystals, surface states, influence of defects on optical properties of photonic crystals. 'Left-handed' materials are reviewed, and a nature of negative dielectric and magnetic permittivity.
5. General Laboratory Workshop for Master's Degree Applicants
1st year course (2nd term), 4 credits (120 hours)
Senior Lecturer Valentyn I. Lymar
A laboratory workshop which includes two laboratory works at each of the six specialized departments of the Physical faculty, Physical optics chair being among them. The program has been designed and provided by assistant professor of the General physics chair Olena M. Savchenko who is the person responsible for the course.
6. Computer Modelling of Physical Processes And Phenomena
1st year course (2nd term), 6 credits (180 hours)
Associate Professor Yevhen D. Makovetskyi
The course of practical lessons involving mathematical program packages for calculating and modelling of the optical phenomena such as interference, diffraction, refraction, nonlinear optical effects. Among the studied tools are those created for solving equations and systems of equations, for mathematical processing of images etc.
7. On-The-Job Practice
2nd year course (3rd term), 6 credits (180 hours)
Senior Lecturer Valentyn I. Lymar
On-the-job practice for master's degree applicants of the Physical optics chair, who study according to the educational-professional program «Physics», is conducted during the first 4 weeks of the term with a break from studies. The practice base is the Physical optics chair.
8. Laboratory Workshop on Laser Physics And Nonlinear Optics
2nd year course (3rd term), 3 credits (90 hours)
Senior Lecturer Valentyn I. Lymar
This course is dedicated to carrying out laboratory tasks in the fields of nonlinear optics, laser physics and holography.
9. Undergraduate Practice
2nd year course (3rd term), 6 credits (180 hours)
Associate Professor Mykola O. Makarovskyi
Undergraduate practice for master's degree applicants of the Physical optics chair, who study according to the educational-professional program «Physics», is conducted during the last 5 weeks of the term without a break from studies. The practice base is the Physical optics chair.
